Swap Avoriaz for Arachova: it's time to discover Greece's 'winter Mykonos'
Briefly

"Greece is ideal for a ski holiday - we have sunshine most days, and you can often ski with a view of the sea. Also, Greek mountains are lower than the Alps, so the risk of avalanche is lower," Eleni Prablanc, a guide with local company Trekking Hellas Parnassos, explained. This unique aspect makes Greek ski resorts appealing as they offer good weather and safety, unlike many high-peak areas elsewhere.
"Icicles hanging from the shaggy green snow-coated fur of a thousand pine trees glistened ahead of us like Christmas tree decorations as we drove deep into the forest. Above us, the sky was the silky varnished blue of a song thrush's egg, and the snow was so deep that our jeep lurched and wallowed like a ship ploughing its way through white water," showcasing the captivating beauty of northern Greece's winter landscape.
"With its balmy climate, a myriad of dazzling islands, blissful blond-sand beaches and sparkling seascapes, Greece's coastal resorts are a magnet for most visitors. But with 80 per cent of its surface covered by mountains, this country, which receives around 33 million visitors per year, is also the perfect destination for a winter escape without the crowds," emphasizing the contrast between Greece's popular coastal destinations and its lesser-known mountainous regions.
