Councillors from Sutton have stated that the refusal to discuss the incinerator reflects a troubling unwillingness to engage with residents’ concerns about waste management and pollution.
The motion proposed by Hackbridge councillor Dave Tchill seeks to address community health and environmental impacts, pressing for air quality monitors and an engaged dialogue with local residents.
Dr. Ian Williams, professor at the University of Southampton, emphasized that the practice of burning waste is contradictory to the urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
A BBC report revealed that energy from waste incineration is currently the dirtiest power source in the UK, being five times more polluting than the average unit of electricity.
