Capt Evan Brodsky captured remarkable footage of over 1,500 Risso's dolphins forming a super pod in Carmel Bay, California. This unusual sighting was extraordinary, as these dolphins typically travel in groups of only 10 to 30. The dolphins were seen leaping and engaging in playful behaviors, delighting the marine biologist on board, Colleen Talty. The relatively shallow waters of the Monterey coastline, influenced by a nearby underwater canyon, likely facilitated this gathering as several pods likely joined forces while migrating south.
They were just having a great time. So they were breaching everywhere ... tail slapping, coming right over to the boat. They looked like they were having a big party, she said.
Risso's dolphins typically travel in groups of only 10 to 30 animals... this type of dolphin can weigh as much as 1,100lb and reach up to 13ft long.
