A remarkable sighting of more than 1,500 Risso's dolphins was captured off Carmel Bay in California, forming a super pod. Normally, these dolphins travel in much smaller groups. Captain Evan Brodsky documented the event via drone footage as the dolphins displayed playful behaviors like jumping and bow riding. Marine biologist Colleen Talty described the phenomenon as extraordinary, indicating that several pods likely merged for the occasion. Despite not being unprecedented, such large gatherings remain uncommon, particularly in the area’s favorable deep-water conditions.
They were just having a great time. So they were breaching everywhere ... tail slapping, coming right over to the boat. They looked like they were having a big party.
Risso's dolphins typically travel in groups of only 10 to 30 animals, making the sighting of more than 1,500 a rare event.
