'Super pod' of 1,500 dolphins captured on drone video as they cavort off Monterey coast
Briefly

A remarkable sighting off Carmel Bay, California, captured over 1,500 Risso's dolphins forming a super pod. This rare occurrence, where dolphins typically group in 10-30, was documented by Captain Evan Brodsky from a drone on a whale-watching trip. Marine biologist Colleen Talty remarked on the joyfulness of the dolphins as they leaped and played in the water, engaging in bow riding and other playful behaviors. While large gatherings have been noted before, they remain an uncommon spectacle, particularly in this coastal area favored for its deep water.
They were just having a great time. So they were breaching everywhere ... tail slapping, coming right over to the boat. They looked like they were having a big party.
The large mix of adult and juvenile dolphins was likely the result of several pods coming together and swimming south, she said.
