The civil war in Sudan has devolved into a severe humanitarian crisis, as warned by the African Union. The conflict, which erupted in April 2023, has resulted in approximately 12 million people displaced, with many lacking access to food and basic medical care. Authorities report alarming rates of malnutrition among children, alongside a rise in related hospital admissions. The violence has led to grave abuses including attacks on schools and hospitals. Difficulties in delivering humanitarian aid due to conflicts between military factions further complicate the dire situation for those in the affected regions.
The war has hampered access to humanitarian relief, led to shortage of food and aggravated hunger, Mohamed Ibn Chambas, chairperson of the AU High Level Panel on Sudan (HLP-Sudan), said on X.
AU officials warned that hundreds of thousands of children are now malnourished. Hospital admissions for malnutrition rose by 44 percent in 2024, with more than 431,000 children receiving treatment.
