Thomas Crowther, an influential ecologist recognized for his groundbreaking research on trees, is leaving ETH Zurich after the institution cited "reports of alleged misconduct" and a loss of trust in his role. Following his notable work that spurred high-profile ecological initiatives, Crowther's lab is being dissolved, impacting 40-60 employees. Emotional turmoil was described by lab manager Emily Clark, as the team struggles with sudden job losses. Despite declined comments from both Crowther and ETH Zurich, he is reportedly negotiating a relocation for his lab amid the unfolding situation.
"The team is doing its best to be resilient, but most of us are in shock, and there is grief over what has been lost," says Emily Clark.
"Crowther rose to prominence while doing postdoctoral research at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, leading to significant figures valuing his work on tree conservation."
