South Korean media report 28 people dead after a plane catches fire at an airport

South Korea's emergency office reported that 28 people have been confirmed dead after a Jeju Air plane caught fire at Muan airport, returning from Bangkok.

The plane, with around 180 people on board, veered off the runway due to malfunctioning landing gear, hit a fence, and subsequently caught fire.

Local media indicated over 20 casualties, but South Korea's emergency office initially could not confirm the reported deaths, focusing on ongoing rescue operations.

Footage showed thick black smoke and flames engulfing the plane, while emergency officials investigate the fire's cause and ongoing rescue efforts proceeded.
