Sonoma State to cut entire athletics program, degrees and more to address nearly $24M budget deficit
Briefly

Sonoma State University announced significant budget cuts aimed at addressing a $23.9 million deficit projected for the 2025-26 academic year. Interim President Emily Cutrer explained that the university will discontinue several academic departments, eliminate all intercollegiate athletics programs, and lay off many faculty members due to a drastic 38% decline in enrollment since 2015 combined with rising personnel costs. The decision, though necessary according to Cutrer, is emotionally charged, affecting many students and faculty who have personal, academic, and financial ties to the university.
I know this is difficult news for our campus community. I am keenly aware of its human impact, and how individuals, families, relationships, and communities are affected by such news.
The main reason for the deficit was decreasing enrollment at Sonoma State, which has dropped 38% since 2015.
All athletic programs are getting cut. Cutrer said any student athletes who choose to stay at SSU will remain eligible to continue receiving their scholarships.
One of the big reasons I am here is for athletics and baseball. If I wasn't playing baseball, perhaps I may have chosen a different university.
