Sonoma State University is cutting its intercollegiate athletics programs, eliminating several academic departments, and laying off numerous faculty members due to a significant budget deficit of nearly $24 million. The decision affects 46 faculty members' contracts for the upcoming academic year and several degree programs, including philosophy and theater arts. Enrollment has dropped 38% over the past decade, contributing to financial struggles. Despite these cuts, student-athletes can maintain their scholarship eligibility. Interim President Emily Cutrer emphasized the necessity of these actions for long-term fiscal stability and alignment with CSU's mission.
"I know this is difficult news for our campus community. I am keenly aware of its human impact, and how individuals, families, relationships, and communities are affected by such news," Cutrer said.
"The cuts will help us ensure long-term fiscal stability; meet the changing needs of future generations of students; align with the CSU's career-focused mission of producing graduates ready to contribute to California's economy, culture, and schools," Cutrer stated.
