SNL50: The Anniversary Special maintained the classic Saturday Night Live format but expanded its scope with longer duration and an extensive lineup of stars. The show opened with light-hearted jokes about age from Sabrina Carpenter and Paul Simon, followed by a nostalgic monologue by Steve Martin. John Mulaney provided humorous commentary on fellow hosts before the show shifted focus back to its comedic roots with sketches honoring past formats featuring beloved characters like Kristen Wiig's and the popular "Black Jeopardy". Musicians like Miley Cyrus and Paul McCartney performed, but the spotlight remained on entertainment and laughter.
Mulaney took that opportunity to make it clear to the A-list audience just what he thought of the former hosts amongst them. "The most difficult people I've ever met in my entire life," he said. "It's amazing to me that only two of them have committed murder."
The show featured musical performances from Miley Cyrus and Brittany Howard and Paul McCartney. But - perhaps because SNL just put on a whole freaking concert two days ago - the real emphasis here was on the comedy.
The real emphasis here was on the comedy. Every live sketch was a tribute to a past running sketch format - appropriately enough for a tribute show.
Things kicked off with the return of "Lawrence Welk" and Kristen Wiig's tiny tiny hands, followed by "Black Jeopardy," with Tracy Morgan and Eddie Murphy as Tracy Morgan.
