"The Ring by Snøhetta is a circular structure spanning the river that acts as 'a place for learning, cultivation and everyday encounters, shaped by the rhythms of the river valley and the community who will use it. Architecture here is not an object, but a set of relationships between people and nature, evolving over time.'"
"With The Drop, we wanted to make a place where the landscape and the coastline do as much of the work as the architecture. The Black Sea shore is dramatic and wild, and our role has been to create a structure that allows people to experience that environment up close - to feel the wind, the light and the"
Ion Riva is a master-planned neighborhood spanning 84 hectares along Istanbul's Black Sea coastline in Beykoz, developed through collaboration between international firms Snøhetta, BIG, and MVRDV, alongside local studios KEYM, DB Architects, Rasa, and Bilgin Architects. The first phase will house approximately 3,000 residents, with completion expected in 2027. Four cultural anchors define the neighborhood: The Ring by Snøhetta serves as a learning and community gathering space shaped by river rhythms; The Drop by BIG is a teardrop-shaped timber structure offering cafés, restaurants, and wellness facilities; The Lantern by MVRDV provides additional cultural programming; and a central arts and recreation hub completes the civic infrastructure. This approach positions Ion Riva as a culturally integrated community rather than purely residential, emphasizing ecological sustainability and human connection.
