Slovakia threatens to cut electricity to Ukraine over Russian oil spat
"Slovakia and neighbouring Hungary, which have both remained dependent on Russian oil since the Kremlin launched its invasion of Ukraine almost four years ago, have become increasingly vocal in demanding Kyiv resume deliveries through the pipeline, which was shut down after what Ukraine said was a Russian drone strike hit infrastructure in late January. The Slovak leader accused Zelenskyy of acting maliciously towards his country,"
"Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has issued Ukraine a two-day deadline to resume the pumping of Russian oil through its territory, threatening to cut off electricity to the war-torn country if this demand is not met. Fico issued his ultimatum to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Saturday, warning on X that he would ask state-owned company SEPS to halt emergency supplies of electricity if flows of Russian crude via the Soviet-era Druzhba pipeline crossing Ukraine are not resumed by Monday."
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico gave Ukraine a two-day deadline to resume pumping Russian oil through the Druzhba pipeline, warning that state-owned SEPS could halt emergency electricity supplies to Ukraine if flows are not restored. The pipeline was shut after Ukraine said a Russian drone strike damaged infrastructure in late January. Slovakia and Hungary remain dependent on Russian oil and have pressured Kyiv to resume deliveries. Fico accused President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of malicious behavior and cited Ukraine's earlier halt of Russian gas after a transit agreement expired on January 1, 2025, which he said costs Slovakia about €500 million annually. Slovakia supplied roughly 18% of Ukraine's record imports of electricity last month. Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic opposed a €90 billion EU loan package for Ukraine.
