Skeleton Crew introduces a fresh perspective to the Star Wars legacy by featuring children as the main characters, echoing nostalgic themes reminiscent of The Goonies and Stranger Things. The character KB, who has cybernetic enhancements resulting from an accident, represents a more nuanced portrayal of disability in the franchise. Unlike past representations, KB is depicted as a hero, challenging traditional narratives. The young actress who plays KB, Kyriana Kratter, shares insights into her audition experience and the challenges of portraying a character with limited facial expression due to her design.
It's so weird. I got the audition for the role in January 2022, and it's been three years now.
But, when I initially auditioned for the role, I was pretty expressive with my eyes because when I was reading the script, I was like, okay, so she's probably a little bit robot.
Her presence in Skeleton Crew presented disability in Star Wars with much more care and nuance than ever before.
But unlike Vader, KB is a true hero.
