The 1965 Freedom Ride was a significant event for race relations in Australia, initiated by a group of 29 students from the University of Sydney. Drawing inspiration from the U.S. civil rights movement, they traveled through country New South Wales, spotlighting the racial segregation faced by Aboriginal people. Gary Williams, one of the original riders, reflected on how the trip was transformative for the students, many of whom were unaware of such injustices. The riders aimed to illuminate the realities of racism and advocate for Aboriginal rights during this crucial period in Australian history.
This bus trip, for the students, was life altering. I'd seen it all before. The Freedom Ride was a way to bring attention to the situation in the country areas, put a bit of sunlight on it.
The Freedom Ride became known for highlighting racism in towns where cinemas, pools, clubs and shops were segregated or off-limits to Aboriginal people.
