Former Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao and three others have been indicted on charges of bribery, mail fraud, and illegal actions to influence local government.
The indictment describes a corrupt scheme where the defendants utilized bribes and fraudulent practices to manipulate local government operations, benefitting political mega-donors.
Thao, along with her romantic partner and business associates, is suspected of receiving significant kickbacks, including a $95,000 no-show job linked to her partner.
US officials noted that the conspiracy connected with the Duongs' businesses began in October 2022, highlighting extensive illegal practices in local politics.
