The severely depleted conditions have left nearly half a million children in the Amazon facing critical shortages of water and food, disrupting education and health care.
Antonio Marro from Unicef highlights that more than 1,700 schools and 760 health centres are inaccessible due to drought, making it a life-threatening situation for children.
The ongoing drought, worsened by deforestation and climate effects like El Nino, has caused rivers to retreat significantly, impacting riverside communities reliant on navigable waterways.
Half of families surveyed in 14 southern Amazon communities reported that children are out of school due to these extreme drought conditions, increasing vulnerability to armed groups.
