Serbian Prime Minister Milos Vucevic resigned alongside the mayor of Novi Sad amid intense public protests sparked by a tragedy at the railway station that killed 15 people. The protests, focusing on calls for accountability regarding corruption and construction standards, have persisted for nearly three months. Vucevic and city leadership resigned in a bid to prevent further civil unrest and foster dialogue. The situation escalated after civic demonstrations were met with violence, culminating in serious injuries to students demanding transparency in government actions related to the incident.
The resignations came the day after news reports from Novi Sad shocked the nation, after students were attacked by assailants when they called for new protests.
Vucevic stated, 'This shows that we who were elected to assume responsibility are assuming responsibility so that the situation does not spill over onto the streets and lead to disputes between citizens and divisions in society.'
