Kosovo is preparing for its parliamentary elections on Sunday, the first since declaring independence from Serbia in 2008. With 120 parliamentary seats up for grabs, including reserved seats for national minorities, this election follows a series of snap elections since 2008. Albin Kurti, a prominent figure in Kosovo's independence movement and current Prime Minister, is running for reelection with his party Vetevendosje. His leadership has shifted Kosovo's foreign policy towards greater autonomy, prioritizing sovereignty and reducing reliance on international powers, particularly in regard to Serbia.
Kurti's top priority is to enforce Kosovo's full sovereignty with regard to Serbia and seek the country's emancipation from the international protecting powers.
Kosovo goes to the polls for parliamentary elections on Sunday, the first since its declaration of independence in February 2008.
Candidates are running for 120 seats in the unicameral parliament, with 20 reserved for members of national minorities, half for Kosovo Serbs.
Kurti, a political prisoner under Milosevic, leads the Albanian-nationalist party Vetevendosje, which won the 2021 elections and is seeking reelection.
