Senior NSW police officer fined after consuming 20 standard drinks and crashing work car in tunnel
Briefly

A senior New South Wales police officer faced legal repercussions after being caught on camera drinking with colleagues before crashing a police car. He was fined $1,500 and given a two-year community corrections order for mid-range drink-driving, as the evidence did not support a high-range charge. The incident occurred after the officer had reportedly consumed over 20 drinks in a nine-hour span. Following the crash into a barrier in the NorthConnex tunnel, he fled the scene, later admitting to investigators that he fell asleep at the wheel.
The officer, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was fined $1,500 and handed a two-year community corrections order after being convicted of mid-range drink-driving.
Footage was shown to the court of the moment the officer slammed his unmarked police-issued vehicle into a barrier in the Sydney NorthConnex tunnel.
CCTV captured the officer at the Mercantile Hotel in the Rocks, where he can be seen drinking at a table with several other people including fellow officers.
Crown prosecutor Eric Balodis said there was no accurate evidence of how intoxicated the officer was at the time of the crash since he left the scene and was not breathalysed.
