Senator Dick Durbin has raised concerns about Meta's facilitation of apps like Crushmate that generate nonconsensual nude images. In a letter to CEO Mark Zuckerberg, he cites a report indicating that 404 Media's Crushmate received 90% of its traffic through Meta's platforms. Durbin demands accountability and answers on how Meta safeguards against promoting harmful content and protecting users. He emphasizes the need for tech companies to combat such abuses and to educate the public on the risks of nonconsensual deepfake imagery.
"Tech companies should not assist malevolent actors who seek to take advantage of women and children," Durbin wrote in his letter to Zuckerberg.
"I am gravely concerned with Meta's failure to prevent this perverse abuse of its platforms and I refuse to accept Meta's facilitation of these crimes."
