Dr. Primrose Freestone warns that second-hand clothes can be 'swimming in germs,' including harmful bacteria, fungi, and viruses capable of causing various infections.
'Demand for secondhand and vintage clothing has surged within the last few years,' she explained, noting that while these options are cheaper and environmentally friendly, proper disinfection is crucial.
'Germs that are normal for one person's skin can be disease-causing to others,' highlighting the risk of infections from uncleaned clothing.
Studies show that second-hand garments can harbour infectious pathogens like Salmonella and E. coli, which can lead to ailments including fever and diarrhoea.
