The Disabled Asian Women's Network (DAWN) in Ilford is facing a funding cut from Redbridge Council after 30 years of support. Project leader Neelam Pahl expressed her shock at the sudden decision, which was announced in November 2024, and organized a protest that drew between 250 to 300 attendees, despite inclement weather. The protest aimed to urge the council to reconsider the cuts and was accompanied by a petition with over 900 signatures from community members. Other local Asian charities also showed support during the demonstration.
Neelam expressed her shock at the suddenness of the funding cut stating, 'the sudden cut from the council with little warning is not what we expected from Redbridge - we are shocked.'
She emphasized how the protest turnout demonstrated community sentiment, saying, 'People are desperate for centres like ours to keep running; it is a lifeline for them.'
