Santorini earthquakes: Could a major seismic event happen? DW 02/04/2025
Briefly

Santorini has been shaken by a large number of earthquakes in the past week, prompting the evacuation of around 6,000 people from the island. The seismic activity has raised concerns about potential volcanic eruptions or tsunamis. Despite the numerous tremors, Greek Seismological Service's Efthimis Lekkas noted that no definitive main quake has occurred. Low-level tremors have persisted for months, with over 2,300 earthquakes recorded, many exceeding a magnitude of 4, indicating heightened seismic activity in the region.
The peculiarity of the current seismic activity is that so far no quake has been observed that could be described as the main quake.
We have seen more than 2,300 earthquakes and many of them over 45 now have a magnitude over 4, which is a possibility for a significant event.
