Santa Clara County courthouse mural is racist, advocates say - San Jose Spotlight
Briefly

Silicon Valley organizations, including the NAACP and Muwekma Ohlone tribe, are urging the removal of a mural at the Santa Clara County Superior Court in Palo Alto, claiming it promotes racist imagery. Leaders argue the mural’s depiction of Native Americans undermines historical reality and perpetuates trauma stemming from colonialism. While the court acknowledges the issue, it struggles with county policies that classify the mural as a historical artwork, complicating efforts to address concerns and potentially cover the mural without alteration.
The portrayal of our ancestors as scantily clad and kneeling before those religious clerics who enslaved us glosses over the reality of our existence: a reality that has been marred by systematic genocide.
We absolutely do not want it to be displayed. Covering the painting without damaging it is something that we are now contemplating.
