San Jose Jazz’s fifth annual New Works Fest celebrates six Bay Area artists premiering original compositions, each funded by the Jazz Aid Fund. With a total of $139,000 allocated since 2021, the SJZ supports musicians by providing unrestricted grants that facilitate creative projects. Highlighted artists include Leela Paymai, whose Zheniia project intertwines jazz and Iranian traditional music, and Ryan Trujillo, whose New Beginnings Quartet marks a fresh departure in his musical style. The festival underscores the importance of supporting local artists and fostering innovation in music.
The SJZ New Works grant was perfectly timed and allowed me to expand the project budget and get video and artwork done in the process.
Using a mix of ancient and modern instruments, I've found an outlet to express multiple sides of my musical upbringing.
