Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, expressed strong opposition to Elon Musk’s unsolicited $97.4 billion bid to take over the company. In a letter to employees, Altman asserted that OpenAI's governance prevents any single individual from gaining control. He criticized Musk's motivations as conflicting with OpenAI's mission. Although Musk claims the intent is to refocus OpenAI on safety and open-source principles, Altman stated that the board plans to reject any official offers. The situation has heightened tension within OpenAI, with employees feeling a mix of fear and frustration about the potential takeover.
"Our structure exists to ensure that no individual can take control of OpenAI," Altman wrote, according to two sources with knowledge of the letter. "Elon runs a competitive AI company, and his actions are not about OpenAI's mission or values."
Musk stated, "It's time for OpenAI to return to the open-source, safety-focused force for good it once was. We will make sure that happens."
Altman has also told employees that OpenAI's board, which he sits on, has yet to receive an official offer from Musk and the other investors.
A group of investors led by Musk stunned the tech industry on Monday when they announced an unsolicited offer to buy all of OpenAI's assets to the tune of $97.4 billion.
