Russian Agriculture Minister Oksana Lut emphasized the dire situation due to drought affecting winter wheat sowing, asking the public to pray for rain, stating, "We plan to sow 20 million hectares, like last year. But we are sowing practically in sand in the hope that it will rain." This highlights the severity of the agricultural crisis due to the lack of rainfall since April in significant cultivation areas.
Lut called for prayers to Elijah, the patron saint of rain and harvests in Russian tradition, saying, "It is very necessary to go to church and light a candle to Elijah for rain. Everyone, please." This invokes cultural beliefs as part of a response to the severe drought.
Despite the dry conditions, Maxar Technologies Inc. reported that some regions in central Ukraine and the Central Region of Russia received rain over the weekend, indicating potential improvement for winter wheat crops. The rain could enhance soil moisture crucial for the upcoming sowing.
