Havering Council confirmed the cancellation of the annual Christmas lights switch-on in Romford and the absence of Christmas trees due to budget cuts and reduced government funding.
Cllr Ray Morgon stated that the council had to make significant savings and could no longer deliver Christmas festivities due to year-by-year government funding reductions and escalating care costs.
The Romford Business Improvement District (BID) director, Julie Frost, noted that any replacement for the Christmas lights would not match the previous year's events due to budgetary constraints.
The council has been facing budget difficulties, leading to proposed cuts in various services, including the cancellation of Christmas events and potential library closures.
