Romania president resigns amid far-right pressure DW 02/10/2025
Briefly

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis announced his resignation, citing the need to alleviate the political crisis following the cancellation of a presidential runoff linked to Russian meddling. The first round had surprisingly propelled far-right candidate Calin Georgescu, who received only 22.9% of votes. Amid fears of foreign influence, the country's top court invalidated the upcoming runoff. Iohannis will stay in office until a new president is elected by May 2025, with Senate leader Ilie Bolojan expected to assume presidential duties temporarily during this transition.
In an emotional address, Klaus Iohannis announced his resignation to 'spare' Romania from the ongoing political crisis following a cancelled presidential vote marred by Russian meddling.
Iohannis's decision came after Romania's top court cancelled the upcoming runoff presidential election due to intelligence reports of Russian interference, which had propelled far-right candidate Georgescu.
Georgescu, who garnered only 22.9% in the first round of votes, claimed Iohannis's resignation as a 'victory for the people of Romania' and urged the resumption of elections.
With Iohannis’s resignation effective immediately, the Romanian Senate leader Ilie Bolojan is expected to take over presidential duties until new elections are scheduled for May 2025.
