Tottenham Hotspur head coach Robert Vilahamn has called for a reduction of the length of the Women's Super League winter break, currently set at five weeks. After Spurs' 1-0 victory over Leicester City, Vilahamn described the team's performance as 'rusty', attributing it to the extended time off and lack of competitive play. He emphasized that teams should play more matches during this break to retain momentum and better prepare for the pressures of league play. Balancing player rest with game readiness is crucial for maintaining high performance levels in the league.
I think the break for five weeks is too long. I think if you want to have a momentum in this league... then we need to have a little bit of a shorter break to make sure we stay in the momentum.
I think a lot of teams actually didn't have the perfect first half, and then in the second half a few teams were really good. Obviously, Chelsea were really good.
You need a few goes before you do that. In a normal pre-season you have three, four or five games... we didn't have many games and you can tell that the players didn't really know how to deal with the pressure.
