Rescuers in Japan struggle to save truck driver trapped in sinkhole
Briefly

Emergency responders are attempting to rescue a 74-year-old truck driver who fell into a large sinkhole in Yashio city, near Tokyo. The sinkhole, initially measuring 10 meters wide and deepening due to corroded sewage pipes, has complicated rescue efforts, as the truck driver has been unresponsive since shortly after the incident. Efforts to stabilize the ground and use lifting equipment have been unsuccessful. Local authorities have advised residents to conserve water, impacting at least one million people, while evacuation measures are in place for those living nearby.
Rescue workers also attempted to remove sediment and used drones for reconnaissance, but neither method proved effective in the perilous conditions of the sinkhole.
Fire chief Tetsuji Sato stated, 'It is an extremely dangerous condition,' highlighting the precariousness of the rescue efforts and the unsteady ground.
