State prosecutors have charged Mike Kobeissi, a real estate agent, with price gouging for raising rental prices by 38% after a couple lost their home to the Eaton fire. The allegations follow an emergency order from Gov. Newsom aimed at shielding fire victims from exploitation. Attorney General Rob Bonta emphasized that the Department of Justice is committed to fighting price gouging, while Kobeissi argues that the rent increase was justified due to a switch in school districts, unrelated to the fire.
"May this announcement serve as a stern warning to those who would seek to further victimize those who have lost everything," said Attorney General Rob Bonta.
"There's been a mistake," said Mike Kobeissi, claiming that the rental increase was due to market changes and not the fires.
