"Untreated and poorly treated wastewater can be contaminated with bacteria and viruses that make people sick," said the EPA, highlighting the health risks posed to the public.
The EPA stated that wastewater discharges continue to significantly pressure water quality in many of our rivers, estuaries, lakes, and coastal waters, detailing the environmental impact.
"Wastewater treatment problems have persisted for years, and Uisce Éireann's lengthy timeline for repairs is making the situation unacceptable," according to Dr. Ryan from the EPA.
Despite identifying 73 wastewater treatment plants as priorities, the EPA revealed that Uisce Éireann has not begun upgrade works at half of them, reflecting insufficient action.
