Independent candidates continue to lobby local councillors to secure the backing of four councils required to appear on the presidential ballot. Three candidates have been nominated by parties through the Oireachtas route: Catherine Connolly, Heather Humphreys and Jim Gavin. No Independent candidate has yet obtained the 20 TDs or senators necessary for an Oireachtas nomination. Campaigning to councillors is ongoing throughout the day as candidates seek council endorsements to meet the alternative nomination route. MMA fighter Conor McGregor withdrew from the contest on Monday morning after intending to pursue the council route.
