"Independent candidates are continuing their pitches to local councillors throughout today in a bid to secure the backing of four councils needed to get their name on the ballot. MMA fighter Conor McGregor on Monday morning pulled out of the race, having intended to go via the council route."
Three candidates have been nominated through the Oireachtas route: Catherine Connolly, Heather Humphreys and Jim Gavin. No Independent candidate has yet secured the backing of 20 TDs or senators required for an Oireachtas nomination. Independent hopefuls are actively approaching local councillors to obtain endorsements from four councils to qualify for the ballot. Independent candidates continued council-level outreach throughout the day to try to reach the four-council threshold. MMA fighter Conor McGregor withdrew from the race on Monday morning after planning to pursue the council nomination route.
