In Kinshasa, demonstrators launched attacks against multiple foreign embassies, including those of France, Belgium, and Rwanda, amid escalating tensions over the actions of M23 rebels in eastern DR Congo. The police responded with teargas as protesters clashed with security forces, vandalizing the embassies and expressing outrage against perceived international inaction, particularly towards Rwanda. The conflict in the region has resulted in significant humanitarian crises, with Goma being a focal point. The M23 rebels, who are backed by Rwanda according to the DR Congo government, are advancing into Goma, prompting calls for international intervention.
Residents reported gunfire overnight in Goma, a city of 2 million people which the rebels claimed to have captured on Monday. Explosions and gunfire were heard near the now-shut Goma airport.
We denounce the international community's hypocrisy. They must tell Rwanda to stop this adventure," said Timothée Tshishimbi, one of the protesters.
The M23 rebels temporarily took over Goma in 2012 before being forced to pull out under international pressure, and resurfaced in late 2021 with increasing support from Rwanda.
The protesters demanded that the international community pressure Rwanda over the rebel advance.
