Prince William has agreed to end the last feudal restrictions on land ownership in his Duchy of Cornwall estate, allowing residents to buy their freeholds.
Residents of Dartmoor and Newton St Loe will be given the right to purchase their homes' freeholds under the upcoming Leasehold and Freehold Reform Act.
The Duchy argues that 990-year leases on Scilly are almost equivalent to freeholds, but there are terms that allow the duchy to repurchase properties.
The estate, created in 1337, has historically resisted alignment with modern leasehold reforms due to environmental concerns and ties to the crown.
