The earthquake occurred with a preliminary magnitude of 5.5 at a depth of 4.7 miles, northeast of Yerington, Nevada, with minor shaking felt across adjoining regions.
At 3:45 p.m., the USGS reported that 8,316 people had reported feeling the earthquake, which caused light to moderate shaking as far as California.
After the initial quake, there were nine aftershocks reported, the strongest being a preliminary magnitude of 3.3, but no injuries or damages have been documented.
