Point Molate grant approved, permanently protecting the historic land as open space
Briefly

"The grant funds will make it possible for us to achieve a longtime shared vision of creating a world-class park at Point Molate and preserve this stunning bay front property with its natural and cultural history for all to enjoy," said Elizabeth Echols, president of the East Bay Regional Parks District, highlighting the transformative potential of the project for public enjoyment and historical preservation.
Tribal Council Vice Chair Magdalene Warden expressed profound concerns, stating, 'History is repeating itself,' indicating that the tribe feels sidelined in the purchasing process and likening it to previous colonization experiences, emphasizing a need for better consultation and respect.
California Coastal Conservancy’s project manager Marilyn Latta mentioned, 'meetings were held and letters were sent to the tribe’s legal team regarding the purchasing agreement,’ asserting that the failure lay with state legislators who funded the purchase without direct consultation with the tribe.
While the tribe doesn’t intend to block the sale, Warden reiterated, 'we take issue with assertions they support the purchase,’ signifying ongoing tension and a demand for recognition of the tribe’s concerns in the process.
