The Chorna family are among the 150 Ukrainian men, women, children and families who are being forced to pack their whole lives into a suitcase and leave their homes in Carlow just days before Christmas.
The families along with the local schools, which many of the children attend, were notified only last Thursday, December 12, that the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth would be closing the centre due to fire safety concerns.
Many say they still bear the trauma of losing their homes and loved ones in Ukraine. Now that trauma is being revisited as they face the prospect of losing another home and another community in the space of just two years.
As a result, the majority of these families will not be relocated locally in Carlow. Instead they will be sent to alternative accommodation in counties Kilkenny, Wexford, Dublin, Limerick, Waterford and Tipperary.
