Howard Webb, the PGMOL referees chief, deemed Moises Caicedo's tackle on Pape Sarr "reckless" but emphasized it did not warrant a red card. He explained that despite concerns from some, the tackle did not involve excessive force or endanger Sarr's safety.
Webb noted that while the swinging action of Caicedo's foot followed through into Sarr's leg, it did not constitute 'serious foul play'. He highlighted that at full speed the contact looked different from slow-motion replays, leading to misunderstandings about the severity of the challenge.
Discussing referee Anthony Taylor's decision not to issue a yellow card, Webb stated: "I think a yellow card should have been shown. Caicedo received no disciplinary sanction for that action which I believe was reckless but not excessive to warrant a dismissal."
