A person was pronounced dead at the scene after being hit by a train at Streatham Common station. The incident occurred just before 2.50pm.
The British Transport Police confirmed that the incident is not thought to be suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.
The accident affected both Southern Railway and the Gatwick Express service, causing all lines between East Croydon and Clapham Junction to be locked during emergency response.
Delays persisted throughout the day, even after all lines were reopened at around 5.50pm, due to the impact of the tragic incident.
