Over 440,000 energy accounts in arrears as Government's energy credits run out
Briefly

In the wake of Storm Éowyn, ESB Group's CEO suggested repair costs could result in higher electricity bills, prompting pushback from political leaders against burdening consumers. Despite a profit increase of over 33% to €868m, arrears among residential customers are notably high. Recent energy credits offered temporary relief, but experts warn that as these credits conclude and winter bills arrive, the number of households struggling to pay their bills may worsen, with over 440,000 accounts currently in arrears.
Labour leader Ivana Bacik and Social Democrats TD Jennifer Whitmore emphasized that the ESB must not pass on the costs of repairs from Storm Éowyn to consumers.
Daragh Cassidy of Bonkers.ie noted that while energy credits supported some reduction in arrears, high energy prices would likely lead to an increase in payment delinquencies.
