Catt Hobbs, founder and director of We Own It, expressed concern over Thames Water's request for a £3 billion loan, stating homeowners will ultimately bear this financial burden: "Thames Water is asking for permission to borrow an extra 3 billion on top of its existing 16 billion debt and we, as homeowners in the Thames Water region, will end up paying for that extra debt."
Hobbs further criticized the impact of privatisation, highlighting how Thames Water has prioritized profits over public welfare, saying, "Since privatisation, Thames Water has handed out 7 billion in dividends at our expense. They have built up a debt mountain at our expense."
Matt Scott, a protest supporter, described the situation as indicative of wider societal issues, saying, "It's not just this issue. I think in many ways, the social infrastructure, the things we depend upon are being commodified and financialized, which is unacceptable to me."
