Esmeralda, the last of the 27 dogs surrendered to Second Chance Animal Services, is an 8-year-old dachshund mix facing significant medical challenges including hernia repair and heartworm treatment.
Sheryl Blancato, CEO of Second Chance Animal Services, explained the owner's situation as an unfortunate overextension, noting, "As the story goes, it just kind of kept multiplying and so it just got out of control."
Lindsay Doray, Chief Development Officer, highlighted the recent trend of medically needy pets stating, "Lately, we are seeing a lot more medically needy pets coming our way; Support is appreciated."
The shelter is asking for community donations to cover Esmeralda's expected $2,000 in medical expenses as they anticipate her entry into the foster-to-adopt program next week.
