Despite the tranquil current condition of Baliceaux, its history is marred by the genocide of nearly 5,000 Garifuna, who were brutally expelled and interned here by British colonisers.
The harsh conditions the Garifuna faced upon arrival were unimaginable: stranded in a foreign land with no shelter and limited food, many succumbed to disease amidst their suffering.
