Oklo, backed by Sam Altman, has received letters of intent from major datacenter providers for up to 750 MW of power from its small modular reactors (SMRs). This is a step towards addressing the increasing energy demands of datacenters.
Oklo's small modular reactors, inspired by the Experimental Breeder Reactor II, will utilize liquid-metal cooling and are designed to produce between 15MW and 50MW of power, potentially requiring 15 to 50 reactors to meet customer energy needs.
The startup is optimistic about bringing its first nuclear plant online before the end of the decade, contingent upon approval from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, for which they have already submitted applications.
Unlike some other SMR startups, Oklo's designs are intended to run on recycled nuclear fuel, with ongoing collaborations to develop recycling technologies and a plan to implement a commercial-scale operation by the early 2030s.
