Officer who ran pizza company on sick leave fired
"well enough to work but not well enough to serve the public in any capacity"
"there were occasions where Sgt Skelt appeared to be working on days where he was reported absent from the Met for sickness"
"in the impossible position of following the order or not being able to provide for myself when I retired."
Metropolitan Police sergeant Matt Skelt was dismissed for gross misconduct after promoting and working at his mobile pizza business while on long-term sick leave. Skelt had served 34 years and suffered ongoing health problems, and he said he ran the business to prepare for retirement. He originally had permission for the venture, but an August 2025 letter indicated the business authorisation was being rescinded as incompatible with his phased return and recovery. Social media showed him selling pizza at events and working outside a pub on days recorded as sick leave. The disciplinary panel ruled he should have withdrawn from public-facing activities and found him unfit to serve the public.
