October 9: ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY
Briefly

On October 9, 1944, Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia led 10,000 city employees in one of the largest Columbus Day parades. Expecting over 50,000 marchers, this event showcased notable participation from uniformed services, including 4,000 sanitation workers and 2,500 policemen. LaGuardia’s leadership emphasized civic pride and unity, with students also prominently featured in the youth group, showcasing the involvement of community and service members in the event.
In 1947, Customs Bureau Official Edson J. Shamhart criticized the inability of the U.S. to thwart aerial narcotics smugglers exploiting surplus fighter planes and high altitudes. He stated that the lack of enforcement at the Mexican border hampered operations, suggesting that effective interception required better reconnaissance at the source of smuggling south of the border. Shamhart highlighted the need for grassroots informants to monitor suspicious aviation activity.
